Videos comment threads, Suggestions for Gopher

Question

I have two questions! I'll post them in one thread.

1.: I just thought, since you already create a thread for each of Gophers vids we could actually use them to talk about that episode in there, couldn't we? I don't know this forum software, but in my old forum there was an option to allow comments for people but not letting them create threads.

2. We have a Mod suggestion thread, but that one is for minions. I don't know, I feel since this forum belongs to Gophers site, and he might actually read this, we could get more in touch with him. I know he is a busy man, but we are his minion! We could at least collect mods he could review or play or whatever and he might read it. I feel like it should be more that way. We minions talk a lot here. There is even the thread which game should Gopher play next. You could make a Subforum where you collect the threads, that are for Gopher. So he doesn't have to read though all the forums and knows where to find stuff, he might taking suggestions from. In his videos he talks about that someone suggested this and that. Minions to the front! :DgopherVaultStiv

What do you think?

Gopher has shown some interest in having his own forum section but as of now we don't know when that is going to become a permanent feature. At the moment, the best way to contact Gopher is via Youtube comments or a Twitch message.

Regarding video notifications, the reason they are currently locked is to keep them from taking over the 'new posts' page, especially when Gopher's posting schedule gets back to normal. Their purpose is the same as the Twitch announcements: to direct traffic to the video without being too obtrusive.

You don't have to use google+ even if you make an account. Personally, I set one up with, I think, the minimum necessary information which is stuff google undoubtedly has on me anyway so I could comment on youtube videos. True I'm planning on using it to start making and posting videos in the future, but again, that's not a neccesity.

Oh and I think the sigh is because it's a regular question how best to contact Gopher or suggest something to him and the answer, from Gopher himself if I remember correctly, is either youtube comments or a Message on twitch. I'm just guessing that's what the sigh was about anyway.

First piece. Ok. That's cool. And I think both gopher and the forum would benefit from it.

Second piece. Again. I don't now this software. Been admin to a forum for 8 years that used php-forum software. There could be an option to exclude said forum from the hot files so they don't appear. That could help.

Everything said my curiosity is sated again. :)

Hm. Thought that is what this forum is about.

I thought that as well when the Minion's forum moved to Gopher's site. Now, back by popular demand, please enjoy the following two paragraphs from the Grumpy Old Man Rants series.

I still like the idea of Gopher coming here and sharing his wisdom and possibly collapsing the likes feature with the number of likes he receives. But let's keep it real. While there seem to be interesting things going on who can blame Gopher or anyone else who may not have time or patience to look for it. It wasn't always like that. It wasn't that long ago when role playing had a certain class and was conducted in the appropriate section. I do understand that some people are having fun pretending to be crazy and whatnot while harvesting post counts and trophies and whatever. But people should understand that this is not fun for everybody and it may turn other people away from the forums including Gopher.

It may seem to you that I keep complaining and you would be right. And I do not enjoy that. I made a sign to leave some room for others to express their opinion before I possibly derail and get yet another thread locked. But mind you I am not complaining for my own sake. I seem to have loads of time and I don't mind going through dozens of posts because I know I will stumble on something interesting and fun eventually. Had I arrived only now and gave in to the first impression and with Gopher being a no show I probably would not hang around.

Having described a problem that as usual I'm told exists only in my head let me get back to your suggestion 2) I think a special Gopher section would be a good solution as long as filtering "new posts" were possible and provided certain rules are followed I would trust minions to use their own judgement and create topics and questions Gopher might be interested.

@TiDinzeo I totally agree except you gave my *sigh* way too much credit.

@Philosophercat Thanks for the explanation.

See. So we all want the same. :)

Well not really. Because it seems that @unforbidable has a problem with people like @Sicarius001 @Aj-M1A2X @ImNotLolzor @Chibihelghast and so on (including me).

I have to admit: I feel offended by you, @unforbidable , to say

[...]Having described a problem that as usual I'm told exists only in my head[...]

is hurting. Would you like to be called a problem? No, I guess.

I don't understand why you keep pointing at us and telling us how bad we are. That there should be a new rule that all threads need to have a point (Insanity thread, 3 page, down at the bottom) and so on. To say that gopher is not looking at his own forum because of us. That we scare away new users.

Dude! I'm sorry but I find it just insulting. Who are you to judge this? Why are you the authority that decides what is valueable content and what not? Who are you to tell if people are just roleplaying or just being themself? Do you know me? Are you able to tell if I'm playing a role or just being myself when I post in the insanity thread? No you aren't.

I have two requests:

1.) I find it appropriate that we hear something like a little "I didn't mean it that way.". You just said that a few members are a problem, something that is the job of the admins @Philosophercat and @Xelphos to judge. Not you. So please stop spreading stuff like that. It offends people.

2.) If you have a problem with us, and I mean all the "weird" people, talk to us directly. I have no problem talking to you directly but I am sick of you always expressing your disgust for us in this passive but aggressive way. Tell us directly! Not try to get drama by seperating minions into good and bad.

I know how offending this post might be but I really wanted to express how I feel right now. Because I think that everyone is mature enough to be able to discuss this in a civilized manner.

^^^^^ Case in point thread derailment  ^^^^^^

@Philosophercat I understand gopher is busy and all and the pure volume here can be overwhelming. but it would be nice to have a way in which to leave a note, ask a question, or make a suggestion. Even if its a locked thread that only an admin has access to to copy the post into to prevent the spam of content that most threads receive. I do have a ytube account only so I can post and I feel ya FayeLiyah the whole google+ thing Drives me mad. I went in and disabled almost all options I could. but anyway for me I usually download the videos and play them as I work through out the day so I am usually way behind. Reality is I have only been able to watch one twitch and that was the elemental dragons but since then the hot spot got canceled in our office and its no longer an option. So reality is I would never be able to post or get his attention. So would be nice to have away here for him to see it with out all the hoopla and do as he will on his own schedule. gopherVaultStiv

Sheesh, if you believe that the issue of random threads is that urging I suggest requesting a sort of a Spam Pit within the off-topic section, instead of starting the flame and drama within the pages dedicated to more serious topics.

1) It wouldn't be a bad idea, but I don't feel like the forum is active enough for such topics. If people really need to comment, there still is a subforum.

2) The forum should be treated as a common ground allowing the geomyidae-lovers (awkward) to socialize with each other outside of the YouTube or Twitch. I get the concept (at least I hope so) that the Gopher's activity would be lovely, but I don't believe it is a necessity.

Okay, I might've buggered something up when commenting on topic, because the topic itself wasn't my primary concern. Sorry for that.

I thought that's what the off-topic section was, random stuff for minions to talk and socialise in, right? We don't put our silliness anywhere else apart from the introductions, but I'm pretty sure we're allowed that, no?

It's not like I am running around the forums and smacking people with a police baton in the heads or something. If I see tensions, I try to solve them. (Unless I am involved, then beware) Even if it is an ad hoc solution.

Especially that I don't mind anime discussions, a gif thread, a music discussion, a cuisine exchange and forum games. The issue is that while none of them have any negative connotations for me, I am not suprised that it is... troublesome for the others to find the stuff they are interested in.

Again, sorry.

From comments made by the mods in the past, the current "Free Reign" of the current format is probably somewhat limited in life expectancy. Keep in mind that the entire site, Forum included, are still being finalised. Now, I will say that I have a few people whose comments and behaviour, some extremely insulting or superior in nature, have lead me to put several people on "ignore" status. On the other side, some threads, Insanity as a very specific mention, started off fun for me, but have since gone beyond what I find enjoyable. So I opt out of alerts for them, and when they pop up on new posts, I don't read them, and once I've looked through everything, I "Mark all forums as read." I think that the attitude of complaining about what other people do in the threads obviously meant for fun is, quite honestly, egotistical and rude. Conversely, I fell that introductions should be somewhat safe from the uncontrolled insanity until we can at very least determine if the person is going to be cool with that. The intros once were a place where we could welcoming to new people and maybe a bit silly, but they've gotten quite a bit over the top. I can honestly see how some of the greetings could be off-putting. I do know that Gopher has never really frequented the forums, either one, mostly out of his own insanely busy schedule. I know that our mods work their tails off, that they have a way things are to be done, and that ultimately their word is law. I know that if something seems off or needs to be addressed, they can be messaged, and if something needs to be done, they do it. That things like the insanity thread are still going strong would indicate, to those who dislike them, that they are not considered unacceptable. If enough people complain about them, or you feel your swimsuit has too much sand chafing your sensitive bits because of it and enough people share your problem, I'm sure they'd be shut down. It is, in the end, a forum dedicated to the community of respectful adults (mostly) that have grown up around Gopher's channel. Being a rational adult, I find that if I dislike something on the forum, I simply don't involve myself in it, instead of complaining about it. I'll not name those I've ignored, because I find that to be childish as well, but there are certainly those who've made it clear that their opinion is going to be arrogantly stated, instead of being civil.

NOW! I'd love a way on the forum (as if he'd ever read it) to post Mod test suggestions, questions about his own mods, where my comment would not be lost in the hoard or asinine statements that one finds on YouTube; I don't mess with Twitch because history has shown me that what I have to say is rarely considered relevant or valued, so there really is no point.

Firstly, having read all of the comments, everyone does seem to be in agreement with having somewhere more direct to address threads to Gopher himself. As I've said, this is something we've been planning for a long time. I just can't give an ETA on it for now.

As for the notifications, @FayeLiyah , that's an excellent suggestion. I'll take it up with @Xelphos when he gets back.

Now to address @unforbidable 's concerns, firstly I would like everyone to note that they addressed problems vis a vis how the forum is used and not individual members- only individual threads. Before this forum was created, I discussed with Gopher at length how serious he wished it to be, and we both agreed that there was room for professionalism and silliness. He wants his fans to enjoy themselves and not feel constrained, except of course for the ground rules. As far as I can see, the sillier, informal threads are where they ought to be (ex. the off-topic forum). As always, forum users are trusted to use their own best judgment and participate in threads that interest them while ignoring those that do not.

Lastly, I would ask that if anyone has concerns which are not best served through a community discussion please address them to me personally so as not to derail threads in future.
