Gopher's recent announcement that he was starting up XCOM 2 again (with WOTC) made me quite excited... partially because I've spent several months making mods for XCOM 2, two of them being Skyrim-based! It seems fitting.     Long War 2 is Out!

    Well! When they said "really, really soon" yesterday - they meant it. And yes, it is free. It's out on Steam (boo!), but also at the Nexus at http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom2/mods/633/?. It's not clear to me from what I've briefly read what DLCs need to also be installed. No requirements are yet listed. Along with the Let's Try I posted yesterday, Total Biscuit just released a preview on YT. Looks like Quill18 (YT) and ChristopherOdd (YT) have started up Let's Plays of the game (along with many others, I'm sure). Commence the slaughter!
  3. Jake Solomon & Garth DeAngelis, of Firaxis Games, were the overall development leads of XCOM (Jake) and XCOM 2 (Garth). Today they did a (blind) Let's Try of Long War 2 on the Firaxis channel. There show off major changes to the vanilla game, far beyond the (excellent) mods the Long War team have already released (adding new classes, abilities, and enemies): https://www.twitch.tv/firaxisgames/v/115649271 (Twitch VOD; fast forward to ~8:00 to when stream actually starts). Most of the footage shows off the battle level, but they also show off some of the (new!) strategic level. TL;DR: 1) it will be a free add-on (a big surprise to me), and 2) it will be released "really, really soon."
  4. Some amazing unpatched flaws remain (the smoke grenades not working, for example), but a good gamut of patches and game tweaks. Very happy to see dodges from concealed enemies and 100%-to-hits have been disabled. True "character pool only" is also a welcome addition. https://xcom.com/news/en-xcom-2-patch-now-live

  6. This is more for Gopher, most likely, than Minions, but there's now a mod making available numerous countries missing from the vanilla game. I noticed, at a glance, that several missing northern European countries (and frequent Minion homes) - Finland and Denmark, for example - are now available. No voice packs (yet, according to author), unfortunately. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=618481020 At the time of writing, it's only on Steam and not Nexus (the fragmentation... is becoming annoying). One of the things I particularly enjoyed from the Long War mod was making many more soldier nationalities available in the mod, as well as a greatly expanded voice packs for said countries. Shame Firaxis didn't pursue this idea.

Amazing amount of content about modding XCOM 2 and the tools they're releasing to allow people to change the game in almost every conceivable fashion. Lots of commentary by the Arch Sadist himself, johnnylump (of the Long War development team), including their new mods for the game (available at launch). All evidence is that Firaxis ran ideas by them on what sorts of things were desired by modders, and how to make things as easy for them as possible. All good! One thing's clear - Firaxis learned that making a highly moddable game extends the ultimate lifetime of said game. Which means more copies sold! My only gripe - and it's a picky one - is the modding seems heavily based towards publishing on Steam (it appeared to have a "publish on Steam" option built in). They specifically mentioned other means were available, but whereas johnnylump said "on the Nexus" many times, Firaxis devs never did.

As always, actually finishing production of the game is more important than meeting arbitrary release dates (*cough Ubisoft cough*).

  11. This was recorded at PAX Prime (Seattle) on or around 30 Aug. I've (hopefully) set the start point just past the Beyond Earth DLC details, to when the XCOM 2 presentation starts. All of these modifications to the ol' stand-by's... terrify me. Can't wait!
